Crossing the Bar, by Tennyson (1809-1892)
Many of our west coast colleagues have “crossed the bar” and are listed here. Some names are linked to a newspaper clipping or other information.
Those who died while on duty in this region are especially remembered. While rare, it happens. Tom Shelby of Saltspring Island was a member of the Bull Harbour Lifeboat crew and perished on a 1989 mission. His story is here.
Recently in September 19/24 Electrical Officer Jocelyn De Varennes was found missing when his ship “CCGS Vincent Massey” docked in St. Johns, Newfoundland. Presumed lost at sea.
There is a memorial dedicated to those CG members who passed away on duty. It is located on the grounds of the CG College in Sidney Nova Scotia and has a surprising number of names. Visit the Canadian Coast Guard National Memorial.
Names previous to 2023 are available here.
